WBT to Spend Large Sum For Improvements

Transmitter Plant Near Pineville to Be Enlarged and More Office Space Will Be Needed.

That the planned increase of power used by radio station WBT from 5000 watts to 50,000 watts will cost slightly in excess of $100,000, was learned yesterday from Earle J. Gluck, general manager, who stated that plans have been completed and the station is ready to start construction and installation of equipment the moment approval of the Federal Radio Commission is granted.

The present brick structure used to house the transmitter near Pineville, will be enlarged to practically double its present size to provide space for the various electrical units and control panels. A small suite of rooms is also planned to provide living quarters for a night attendant to guard the property, particularly the bank of high power transmitting tubes representing the equivalent of a small fortune.

Additional office space has already been requisitioned at the station's headquarters in the Wilder Building, and installation of a special broadcasting studio ventilating system is being completed.

Fulfillment of the program of improvement seems assured by the end of the year, Mr. Gluck stated, giving the Carolinas as well as adjoining states consistent and powerful radio reception from the Charlotte station in Summer as well as winter and in daylight as well as night.
